动物细胞对葡萄糖或氨基酸等有机物吸收的能量由蕴藏在Na+电化学梯度中的势能提供。Na+—K+泵工作形成的Na+电化学梯度驱动葡萄糖协同转运载体以同向协同转运的方式将葡萄糖等有机物转运进入小肠上皮细胞，然后再经GLUT2以协助扩散的方式转运进入血液，完成对葡萄糖的吸收。

肠上皮细胞通过转运将肠腔的葡萄糖运入肠上皮。假如这些细胞只有如前所述的葡萄糖被动转运蛋白，那么在一次无糖餐后，上皮细胞将把葡萄糖释放到肠腔内，就像在一次含糖丰盛的进餐后，从肠腔摄取葡萄糖那样地自由。但是，好在上皮细胞还具有葡萄糖-Na+同向转运功能，即使当细胞内的葡萄糖浓度高于肠腔中的浓度时，它们仍能通过这种主动转运从肠腔摄取葡萄糖。由于Na+具有陡峭的电化学梯度，当它顺着梯度进入细胞的时候，在一定程度上葡萄糖也和它一起被“拽”入细胞。
